How Did Morelia, Mexico Become the Host for the 2023 Network of Creative Cities Meeting?

In 2017, Morelia was designated as the first city in Mexico to be a Creative City of Music, which is how they joined the Network.

The 2023 annual Network of Creative Cities meeting will be held in this city because of a vote that took place in Querétaro during the last annual conference in 2022 based in Brazil.

This will be the first time the Council of Morelia Creative City of Music is hosting one of the annual Network of Creative Cities meetings.

The 2020 and 2021 annual conferences had to be canceled due to COVID-19. Other meetings before these years were in Italy, France, Poland, Sweden, Japan, and China. The 2013 and 2019 conferences were both held in Italy in Bologna and Fabriano respectively.

What is the UNESCO Creative Cities Network?

Each of the 295 cities stationed throughout 90 countries is designated as a creative city because of their specialties in an art-related entity whether it is design, crafts, popular arts, gastronomy, music, or another category.

The Network originated in 2004 for cities to cooperate in harmony. The partnership among the cities in the network will help enhance urban development for all of them.

What Will Happen at the 2023 Network of Creative Cities Meeting?

This meeting will be a wonderfully musical event where each visiting creative city brings a music piece representing who they are.

The event will involve a symposium and an interactive conference on the challenges of creating music and the art of creativity in general.

All the cities involved in sharing their music will help everyone to learn about different sounds and cultures related to the country of origin’s music.

This type of diversity is important for cooperation and collaboration within the Network of Creative Cities for future successful annual meetings.
